Oyo FRSC Warns Truck Drivers on Dangerous Transport Habits

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has issued a fresh warning to commercial truck drivers who transport passengers alongside goods and livestock. The corps described the practice as dangerous and a threat to public safety.

This warning was delivered during a road safety sensitization event held in Ogbomoso, Oyo State, on Saturday. The event was organised by the FRSC Ogbomoso Unit Command and focused on educating truckers, cattle traders, market leaders, and other transport stakeholders.

Unsafe Mixed Loading Puts Lives at Risk

Speaking on behalf of the Oyo State Sector Commander, Mrs. Rosemary Alo, Assistant Corps Commander Solomon Aderinmola emphasized the importance of separating passengers from animals and goods during transit.

โ€œThis sensitisation aligns with our 2025 Strategic Goal-One, which targets a 10% reduction in road crash fatalities and injuries nationwide,โ€ Aderinmola said.

He noted that allowing people to travel in the same space as livestock and heavy goods is a major cause of road accidents, particularly involving articulated vehicles.

Drivers Urged to Embrace Safer Transport Practices

The Ogbomoso Unit Head of Operations, CRC Tayo Ajayi, also spoke at the event. He highlighted the high casualty rates linked to mixed loading practices and urged drivers to stop the dangerous habit.

โ€œDrivers must also ensure their vehicles are properly maintained to avoid mechanical failures that may result in fatal accidents,โ€ Ajayi advised.

Fulani Leaders, Driversโ€™ Associations Pledge Support

The Seriki Fulani of Ogbomoso, Umar Yaro-Babuga, thanked the FRSC for the outreach and pledged that Fulani cattle traders would comply with safety rules.

Also in attendance were representatives from various drivers’ unions, the Miyetti Allah leadership in the zone, and Seriki Fulani delegates from all five local government areas in Ogbomoso.
