Dele Momodu Raises Alarm Ahead of Democracy Day

As Nigeria prepares to mark Democracy Day, prominent politician and two-time presidential aspirant, Dele Momodu, has expressed deep concerns over the country’s democratic health. Speaking on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief on Wednesday, Momodu declared that Nigeria is now ruled by civilian dictators who have no regard for the people’s needs or democratic principles.

Accuses Government of Civilian Dictatorship

Momodu said democracy in Nigeria is “damaged” and potentially beyond repair, especially as citizens face increasing hardship. “On the eve of June 12, Nigeria is virtually back to civilian dictators who don’t care how you feel or what you think. Nigerians are hungry,” he lamented.

He criticized elected officials and government institutions for displaying arrogance and indifference toward the people. According to him, many politicians act with “audacity and effrontery,” treating the country as their personal empire.

Blames Wike for PDP Crisis and Rivers Emergency

Momodu also accused the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, of hijacking the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and orchestrating the crisis in Rivers State. He argued that Wike’s actions caused the declaration of a state of emergency in the state, calling it “unprecedented” in Nigeria’s history.

He described Wike’s influence as a “coup” within the PDP, asserting that Wike lacks the moral right to dictate the party’s direction. “Just because he wouldn’t go away quietly, a state of emergency had to be declared,” he said.

Despite the turmoil in the PDP, Momodu stated clearly that he would never join the All Progressives Congress (APC). He emphasized that his principles would not allow him to sit in a party where one person dominates others.

Warns Against Growing Authoritarianism in Nigeria

Momodu warned that if unchecked, the current political atmosphere could lead Nigeria down the path of authoritarian rule. He urged citizens and politicians to reflect on the meaning of Democracy Day and work together to restore true democratic values in the country.
